We have turned our daughter’s lemurs obsession into an opportunity for our family to learn more about the endangered species of Madagascar. After reading several non-fiction books about lemurs from our library, we love to go the zoo and see the lemurs in action.
Do you have a little one who is in love with a certain animal?
Do some research to find out more about it and learn together!
To enrich your experience even more, take a field trip to the zoo to get up close and personal with special animals, and many times you will learn more about them and species from the same region. We have looked into zoos that care for lemurs, and found that in the US and abroad, there are several places to experience these bouncing bundles of energy.
For an incredible up-close experience, the Duke Lemur Center in Durham, North Carolina is the “world’s largest sanctuary for rare and endangered prosimian primates.” They offer several tours as a guest in the lemur habitats, behind-the-scene, or even as “lemur keeper” for the day.
Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo, in Nebraska has an exhibit called “Expedition Madagascar” that showcases several types of lemurs and other unique creatures and has partnered with Madagascar Biodiversity Partnership (MBP) to educate about conservation. Through its WildCare Institute, the St. Louis Zoo also has partnered with the Center for Conservation in Madagascar and its researchers work with professionals in Madagascar to protect the remaining lemur population. You can view several lemurs in their primate house.

Outside of the US there are many opportunities to see lemurs as well. For lemur encounters in Australia, the Australia Zoo (north of Brisbane) offers the chance to hand feed their ring-tailed lemur troop. You can also see lemurs at the Taronga Zoo in Sydney. In the UK, there are many different zoos that care for lemurs. One especially well-designed exhibit is “Madagascar” in the Cotswold Wildlife Park.
