Machu Picchu is located in Peru and was built by the Incas, a pre-Columbian civilization that extended from what is now Ecuador, Peru, and parts of Chile, Bolivia, and Argentina. The Incas were incredible engineers who built their palaces, homes, and temples with gigantic, polished stone without iron tools, horses, or carts. The Incas built terraces for farming on the steep mountainsides, an irrigation system whose canals brought water to thousands of people, and buildings that don’t fall during earthquakes. We recently visited Machu Picchu and were awestruck walking through the preserved ruins- at every turn we learned more of their fantastic use of stone and technology.
