We love road trips 🙂 We traveled a lot in US without child, then from UK to my home country in Eastern Europe and on holiday with my son from UK to Spain…and it was the best time we ever had together! Lots of time to talk, play games in the car, many stops to explore…can’t wait to plan our next family road trip!

My kids moan and groan about the long drives but they love to journal their trip in little travel journals we make with card-stock and typing paper. I love roadside attractions and I am trying to pass that on. We do 20 hr trips and 3 yrs in a row it has been Tx to FL or WV. 2 of my boys asked if next year’s trip can be North to WY, over the mountains and to camp in nature they asked. So next year the vacation will be about exploring with family and grandparents just might have to meet us there.

We are headed out on a two week trip tomorrow. Last year we took a 19 day trip. We have four children, and they can’t wait to road trip again. I completely agree with your article, road trip days are the best days of the whole year!

Oh, I love that story! Some of our funniest memories are from our road trips! Thanks for mentioning the Laura Ingalls Wilder Museum— we are just reading the series now, and my kids would love to see the museum:).

Much of it was NOT fun, but now we have a great laugh about the low points. But my parents also did a massive detour adding days to the trip because it would be my only chance to see the Laura Ingalls Wilder museum. We loved the museum and St. Louis, and it showed that my parents were not out to torture us, really, but did want to create good memories. We also learned about how to cope with being lost, discovering that the food you had was spoiled while hours away from a store, hitting a deer in the middle of the night and various other minor emergencies.

Definitely something I’d like to encourage while they are young and hope that it continues when they are teenagers. Now it’s more dealing with, “look at me, look at me” and trying to explain why it’s important to keep my eyes on the road!
