This is a really interesting question, and I would LOVE if we could post it in the Language Latte facebook group, because you would get so many opinions and tips! The short answer: students absolutely will not be producing sentences, but will literally start out only answering yes and no, and then slowly add more vocabulary in their output.

Because I remember in high school, my Spanish teacher tried to make us speak Spanish the whole class & some of the students became frustrated due to the fact they we hadn’t leaned enough to be able to carry on in Spanish for the whole 40 minutes of class time. It’s like our teacher thought if we thought tried really hard, words & sentences would magically flow out of our mouths. Correct me if I’m wrong but that’s not exactly how learning a foreign language works right? How long should a teacher wait until switching to the 100% target language model?
