Yes! It think you could make it more involved by having more involved questions. For example, you might have them measure the distances that all of the apples have traveled, and then take the average. You could also compare data from 2 different stores, including the average distances, and decide which store offers more locally grown produce. Students could gather data at different times of the year, and with additional research, decide which produce is in season during the summer/winter in the northern vs southern hemisphere. Foods that travel long distances frequently have a long time between the time they are picked and the time they are consumed- losing nutrients along the way. In addition, you could look at the “carbon footprint” of eating food traveling around the world vs from a farm nearby. I think these are all really good lesson for kids to think about!
